Carmo Sousa Machado, partner in Portuguese member firm Abreu Advogados has been elected as the chair of Multilaw. Carmo assumed her two-year role as chair from Piyanuj (Lui) Ratprasatporn of South-East Asian law firm Tilleke & Gibbins at the Multilaw Annual Global Meeting 2019 in Dallas on Saturday 19 October.
Currently a member of the Multilaw Board and its Management Committee, she previously served as chair of the EMEA Region. In 2004, she become the first woman to become managing partner of Abreu Advogados, a role she held until 2007. She became the first woman chair of the Abreu Advogados board in 2017.
Commenting on her appointment, Ms Sousa Machado said: "Chairing an association that is present in around 100 countries - and which represents around 10,000 lawyers - and managing to improve on the great efforts that have already been achieved by previous chairs, will mean a lot of hard work and creativity, but I will be helped by a fantastic team. I am very grateful for the trust that has been placed in me.”
