Garlicke & Bousfield Inc was founded by Harry Escombe in Durban in September 1867. Escombe subsequently became the Prime Minister of the then British Territory of Natal and retired from private practice and the firm continued under the names of Thomas Garlicke, with whom Escombe had been in partnership since March 1885, and Escombe’s son-in-law, Henry Richings Bousfield. Over the years the firm has grown from strength to strength to a stage where it presently has a professional staff of more than 35 persons and is able to offer specialised advice in all relevant areas of law in the Republic of South Africa.

The firm offers specialised advice through its five main departments which consist of Commercial and Corporate Law, Estates and Trusts, Employment Law, Litigation (incorporating all aspects of the practice of law in South African courts of law and quasi-judicial tribunals) and Property Law. The firm furthermore has expertise in the fast developing field of environmental law.

In fulfilling the above functions the firm acts for a number of substantial corporate clients with both local and international connections, financial institutions, local authorities as well as serving the interests and requirements of individual clients.

The firm has alliances with leading law firms in the other major centres in the Republic of South Africa, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg and is therefore well placed to offer international associates and clients a full service in respect of all areas of South African law.
