Chris Helmer
About Me
Chris Helmer is one of those few experienced attorneys who maintains both a litigation and a transactional practice. She started practicing in the admiralty area, handling vessel arrests, marine and terminal disputes, vessel sales and construction contracts, charter parties, and sales and letters of credit. Much of that work involved international issues. Her practice soon grew to encompass all kinds of business disputes and complex contracts. With her litigation background, Chris became particularly good at assisting clients to mitigate risk by understanding and clearly drafting their contracts.

As the Oregon economy changed to be more globally focused, so did Chris’s practice. In the 1990s, Chris moved to New York for ten months to obtain her LL.M. in international law from Columbia University, while maintaining a reduced practice and serving, through Miller Nash Graham & Dunn, as in-house counsel to a Daimler-Benz multinational subsidiary located in the New York metropolitan area.

Chris’s practice currently focuses on international dispute resolution in the U.S. and abroad, complex international contracts, and marine-related matters. As a part of her international practice, Chris also assists multi-nationals with a variety of cross-border needs—entering foreign markets using subsidiaries, joint ventures, or distribution networks; drafting sales agreements, foreign manufacturing agreements, and private labeling arrangements; drafting export and import compliance programs; defending customs, export, and FCPA violations; and conducting compliance investigations.
