Anthony Thompson & Co commenced operations in April 1980 as Anthony Thompson & Company after Mr. Thompson served four years in the Chambers of Higgs & Johnson. Presently the Firm employs a total of ten persons comprising attorneys, administrative and clerical staff.
The Firm has achieved a high reputation in The Bahamas and abroad for the quality of its work and professional advice. Its practice is primarily in the areas of corporation, trust, banking, real estate, commercial, estates, insurance, labour and partnership law, conveyancing and civil litigation.
It enjoys a close working relationship with many banks, trust companies, mortgage and financial institutions, developers and realtors.
The Firm boasts of a wealth of expertise in assisting foreign clients in conducting offshore business in International Business Companies (IBC’s).
The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, an independent country within The British Commonwealth of Nations, is a tax haven. There are no income, capital gains, estate, profits, sales, value added, gift or inheritance taxes. No tax information exchange treaties have been signed but an arrangement with the United States government is planned. The Bahamas’ international status as the largest offshore financial centre in the Caribbean.
Nassau serves as the headquarters for the branches and subsidiaries of large financial organizations with international affiliations. Head offices, which engage in intermediary businesses and the main branches of commercial banks, are headquartered in the capital city.
There are also about 400 mutual funds managed or administered in The Bahamas and these control some $40 billion in assets. A stock exchange has been established.
The Firm acts for private companies, partnerships, individuals, public corporations and charitable institutions in The Bahamas. The services provided include:
1) The formation of companies and especially international business companies and domestic companies, financial arrangements, businesses, partnership agreements, reorganizations, mergers, consolidations, public share offerings, shareholders agreements, and joint ventures.
2) Employment agreements, consultancy agreements, and industrial relations contracts generally, also Immigration and Residency applications.
3) Commercial agreements of all types including agency and distribution agreements in The Bahamas and abroad, leasing, franchising, hire purchase, conditional sales contracts and other business arrangements.
4) Intellectual property, applications for patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
5) Agreements with Government for hotel, industrial and other manufacturing concessions and business licenses.
The Firm boasts of an experienced litigation department which provides an essential resource for corporate and individual clients to call on whenever the need arises. The client who seeks legal advice is given a competent opinion based on a sufficient knowledge of the relevant facts, an adequate consideration of the applicable law and the Attorney’s own experience and expertise. The advice is open and undisguised and clearly discloses what the Attorney honestly thinks as to the merits and probable results.
The Firm’s experienced staff has handled all forms of court actions in both the Magistrate’s and the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, and in some instances with the assistance of leading counsel from Britain.
The Government is actively encouraging external investment in The Bahamas. It regards the expansion, revitalization and encouragement of the private sector as urgent and essential to the continuance of economic equilibrium. Accordingly, the Firm advises foreign investors on numerous matters including the acquisition of real estate, property for resort development purposes, or a second or retirement home, the residency and immigration requirements to meet the foreign person’s objectives, and Investment guidelines setting forth the business areas in which foreign investment is encouraged.
The firm handles international tax planning, trust, estate, and matters and structures for overseas corporate and private clients. For many years the Firm has assisted clients by rendering advice on the inheritance laws of The Bahamas and the proper administration of estates.
